(Don’t expect me to do something like this too often.)
This is a matchup analysis for every popular match for Hibiki Tachibana from Senki Zesshou Symphogear.
Hibiki Tachibana vs Yuuki Yuuna (Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero)
What it has going for it:
- Multiple connections (similar personalities, skills and abilities, anime genres, punching out Gods, lesbians)
- Good character chemistry
- Most interesting debate regarding stats and ability clash
- Symphogear vs Yuuki Yuuna has a legacy matchup theme, thanks to both fandoms being very close
What it has going against it:
- Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero is just as, if not more obscure than Symphogear
Hibiki Tachibana vs Yusuke Godai (Kamen Rider Kuuga)
What it has going for it:
- Multiple connections (identical characters, power origins, martial arts, gay)
- Good character chemistry
- Close in stats
- Many Symphogear fans are also Kamen Rider fans. Symphogear has many blatant tokusatsu inspirations as well
What it has going against it:
- Tonial clash (Hibiki’s rather flashy fighting style and attack splashes contrasting with Kuuga’s brutal martial arts)
- Hibiki has other Kamen Rider matches that, while not as thematic, have a lot more creative potential (Fourze and Cross-Z)
- Kuuga himself lacks creative potential when it comes to abilities (simply having different weapons with no standout abilities, with the Planet-level feat being the only thing really mentioned)
Hibiki Tachibana vs Nanoha Takamichi (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)
What it has going for it:
- Multiple connections (similar personalities, mecha magical girls, reaching out to help, lesbians)
- Good character chemistry
- Close in stats
- Symphogear and Lyrical Nanoha have close fanbases due to similar themes. They’ve had a collaboration event in Symphogear’s mobile game (though they never fought)
What it has going against it:
- Contrasting fighting styles (martial arts vs magical blasts)
- Tsubasa vs Fate is the better, and more fitting Symphogear vs Lyrical Nanoha match
- Hibiki’s other Lyrical Nanoha match option is Subaru Nakajima, which works better when it comes to overall fighting style similarities
Hibiki Tachibana vs Sumire Yoshizawa (Persona 5 Royal)
What it has going for it:
- Contrasting themes (regarding pushing down hidden pain)
- Good character chemistry
- The most wanted matchup of SwagJames, a very good person and friend in the VS community
What it has going against it:
- Complete mismatch in stats
- Doesn’t have as many connections compared to the other matches, and has a lack of a legacy theme to it
- The main character of a 5 season long anime vs a last recruited team member of an updated re-release of a game
- Ability contrast clashes too much to give decent choreography (close range martial arts and weapons vs summoning a spirit to cast spells)
Nice list but anime isn’t a genre. It’s a media/industry.
